Theater Of The Mind
"Theater of The Mind"
When it's time to advertise your products or services to potential customers, whether it be by FM radio, TV, or message on hold, it is extremely important that the message you send is the message you really need your target to receive. If you were going to pitch an invention to a major company, you wouldn't want to spend 80% of the conversation on useless banter. You only have a moment of their attention, and in that moment, you'd better be on your game. Your goal had better be to SELL that company on your ideas. So when you are pitching your product/service to your customers, the same philosophy holds true.
In my decade of FM radio experience, I've seen car dealerships use money, hot-dogs, balloons, and even gas generators to sell cars. But are they really selling the car, or are they just offering you a hot dog just to get you in the door. Heck, I may not be in the market for a new car, but a hot dog I'll take any day. So you see, if you don't use your airtime effectively, you wind up with a bunch of happy hot dog lovers and not a single car sold.
So what should you do? How do you sell your product effectively?
"Theater of The Mind"
I'll give you an example of Theater of the Mind. Imagine I'm your neighbor and I just returned from a fabulous vacation in Hawaii. You and I run into each other one day and you ask how my trip was. I say, it was nice, we ate great food, we relaxed on the beach, and so on. You imagine a nice vacation but really aren't compelled to book your own flight to Maui. Now, same scenario only this time I incorporate "Theater of The Mind" and tell you that at night, when your lying on the warm Hawaiian beach, you can see a thousand shooting stars. I go on to describe in detail the smell of the ocean, the feel of the wind in your hair, the unbelievable night life and culture, the amazing cuisine, and so on. Now, you can imagine yourself already there, smelling the food, feeling the sand between your toes, and the wind whipping your hair. This is "Theater of The Mind" and it works.
So if you have a restaurant, you don't sell burgers, you offer "only the best Grade A beef, grilled to perfection over an open flame, topped with fresh lettuce, juicy tomatoes, crisp onions. Mmmmm, that's making me hungry already.
If you sell cars, you don't sell cars, you sell reliability, honesty, dependability, service, and oh yeah, you also get a car with your purchase.
